Irises is part of a series of still life works created by Vincent van Gogh after he admitted himself to the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence during the final year of his life in 1890. Inspired by the asylum’s garden, he captured the flowers with striking contrast, setting a lush bouquet against a vibrant background. Originally painted in shades of purple, the irises have since shifted to the now-iconic blue due to the fading of red pigments over time.
